Why Convert PNG to JPG?

An upload limit that rejects your file
Job portals, university applications, government forms and email attachments all impose hard caps — often 2 MB, sometimes 500 KB, occasionally 200 KB. A screenshot saved as PNG blows through those limits without trying. Converting PNG to JPG is the fastest way under them.
A web page that loads too slowly
Images are almost always the heaviest thing on a page. Serving a photograph as PNG can multiply its weight several times over for no visible gain, because the lossless compression PNG uses is a poor fit for the soft gradients and sensor noise a camera produces.
Something that will not accept PNG at all
Some print services, older document systems, digital photo frames and camera-roll imports still expect JPG. In those cases the conversion is not an optimisation, it is a requirement.
And one thing PNG to JPG will not fix
If your PNG is a screenshot of text, a chart or a logo, converting it to JPG can make it look worse and sometimes makes it bigger. JPEG compression was designed for photographs, and it struggles with the hard edges that screenshots are made of.

What Happens to a Transparent Background
JPG has no alpha channel. There is no way to store "transparent" in a JPG file, so every transparent pixel in your PNG has to become an actual colour when you convert PNG to JPG.
This single fact causes more confusion than anything else about the format. People convert a logo with a transparent background, open the result, and find a white box around it — or worse, a black one, because some converters silently fill with black.
That fill colour is a decision, and it should be yours. When this tool detects transparent pixels in your PNG it shows a colour control, defaulting to white. Pick black, pick your brand colour, or type a hex value. The checkerboard swatch is there to show you which parts of the image are currently transparent.
White works for documents and most websites
If the JPG will sit on a white page — a printed form, a Word document, a plain web page — white is the fill you want. It is the default here for that reason.
Black works for dark interfaces and video
A logo destined for a dark slide deck, a video overlay or a dark-mode site should be filled with the background it will actually sit on, not with white you then have to crop out.
Match the destination exactly
If you know the hex value of the background the image will live on, type it in. Filling with the exact destination colour makes the edge of the image invisible, which is the closest a JPG can get to real transparency.
Or do not convert at all
If the image genuinely needs to sit on more than one background, no fill colour is correct and you should keep the PNG. Convert a copy to JPG for the one place that demands it, and keep the original.

Choosing the Right JPG Quality
A JPG quality value is not a percentage of anything you can see. It is a knob on the encoder that controls how aggressively fine detail is thrown away, and the visible effect changes from picture to picture. That is why this converter shows you a real measured size instead of a prediction.
Still, a few landmarks hold up across almost every image:
85 — the default, and the one to keep
At quality 85 a photograph is visually indistinguishable from the original for practically everyone, while the file is typically a fraction of the PNG it came from. This is why 85 is the default here and the value most photo pipelines settle on.
60 — visible, but often acceptable
Around 60 you start to see softening in fine texture and faint blocking in flat areas such as skies. For a thumbnail or a quick email attachment that is usually a fair trade.
Below 40 — you will see it
Blocking becomes obvious, edges grow halos, and gradients band. Reach for this only when a hard size limit leaves you no choice.
Or skip the guessing entirely
Switch to target size, type the number your form or mailbox demands, and the converter searches for the highest quality that still fits — eight encodes, narrowing the range each time, all in your browser. It is the difference between "quality 70" and "under 200 KB", and only the second one is a thing anyone actually needs.
When quality alone is not enough
If a JPG is still too large at quality 50, the problem is resolution, not compression. A 4000-pixel-wide photo displayed at 800 pixels is carrying twenty-five times the pixels it needs. Resizing costs you nothing visible and saves far more than another quality drop.
When You Should Not Convert PNG to JPG
JPEG compression works by breaking the image into 8×8 pixel blocks and discarding the fine frequency detail inside each one. That is brilliant for photographs, where the discarded detail is mostly sensor noise. It is actively bad for images made of flat colour and hard edges, because a hard edge is exactly the high-frequency detail JPEG throws away.
Screenshots and anything with text
Text in a JPG gets a faint halo — a ghost of the letter smeared into the background. At small sizes it reads as blur; on a screenshot of a spreadsheet or a code editor it can make the text genuinely harder to read.
Logos, icons and line art
Flat colour compresses beautifully in PNG and badly in JPEG. Converting a logo to JPG often produces a larger file than the PNG, with visible mottling in what should be solid colour.
Anything that needs transparency
Covered above, but worth repeating: if the image must sit on more than one background, JPG cannot do the job at any quality setting.
Your only copy of an original
JPEG compression is not reversible. Once the detail is discarded there is no way to get it back, so convert a copy and keep the PNG.
