Convert WebP to PNG

Batch-convert WebP files to PNG with transparency intact. And if yours has a white background rather than a transparent one, this can remove it while it converts.

Local processing0 uploads~1.2s avgNo account required

Up to 50 at once

Drop a whole folder of WebP files in and take the PNGs back as a single ZIP.

Transparency survives

Both formats have an alpha channel, so transparent areas come through untouched.

Or create it

If your WebP has a solid background instead, this can knock it out.

Nothing is uploaded

The conversion runs in this tab, animation frames included.

In short: WebP and PNG both support transparency, so converting WebP to PNG carries any transparent areas across untouched. What it does not do is create transparency that was not there — a WebP with a white background becomes a PNG with a white background. If that is your situation, turn on background removal and the solid colour comes out during the conversion. Everything runs inside your browser.

Does WebP to PNG Keep Transparency?

Yes. WebP and PNG both have an alpha channel, so every transparent pixel comes across exactly as it was. Nothing is filled, flattened or approximated.

This is the reason to pick PNG over JPG as your destination. Converting the same file to JPG would force every transparent pixel to become a solid colour, because JPEG has no way to store transparency at all. WebP to PNG has no such problem, and the conversion is lossless in both directions of that particular question.

So if your WebP is a logo, an icon or a cutout product shot with a genuinely transparent background, you can stop reading here — drop it in, convert, done. The rest of this page is about the case that catches more people out.

When JPG would have been the wrong choice

If you were weighing WebP to PNG against WebP to JPG, transparency settles it. JPG is smaller and fine for photographs, but it destroys an alpha channel silently — you find out when the logo you exported has a white box around it.

Why your download was a WebP in the first place

Short version: your browser told the site it accepts WebP, so the site sent WebP instead of the original. Nothing went wrong on your end. There is a fuller explanation, including what to do about it, on the WebP to JPG page.

What If Your WebP Isn’t Transparent?

Converting WebP to PNG preserves transparency that already exists. It does not create any. A WebP with a white background becomes a PNG with a white background — the alpha channel is there, it is just fully opaque.

This is where the searches and the tools tend to talk past each other. Every WebP to PNG converter promises that transparency is preserved, which is true and reassuring — right up until you realise your file never had any. Product shots and logos saved from a shop or a press page usually sit on solid white, and converting the format does nothing to that white.

So this tool offers the other half. Turn on background removal, tell it which colour to take out, and every pixel close enough to that colour becomes transparent during the conversion. For a logo on white, a product on a plain backdrop or a scanned mark, that is all the sophistication the job needs — and because PNG has a real alpha channel, the result is genuinely transparent rather than filled with a different colour.

Why tolerance is not optional

Most WebP files on the web are lossy, and lossy compression makes a flat white background wobble by a few values in every direction. Matching only exact white leaves a speckled fringe behind. The tolerance slider widens the match — around 12% handles ordinary compression, and heavily compressed files may need more.

About the edges

Compression also leaves a thin band of in-between pixels wherever a hard edge meets the background, and colour matching alone cannot catch them. That is what the "trim one pixel" option is for. Turn it off if fine detail starts looking chewed.

What it will not do

This is colour matching, not object recognition. A gradient backdrop, a photographed room, or a subject sharing its colour with the background will not come out cleanly, and raising the tolerance only starts deleting the subject. Cutting a person out of a real photograph needs a model, and shipping one would mean sending megabytes of weights to every visitor.

You see it before you download

Each thumbnail switches to a chequerboard as soon as removal is on, so whatever shows through the checks is genuinely transparent. Move the tolerance slider and watch it update.

Why Convert WebP to PNG?

Beyond transparency, the reasons to convert WebP to PNG are mostly about what will accept the file. Browser support for WebP is universal; support everywhere else still is not.

Software that will not open it

Older versions of Photoshop, default photo viewers on Windows before Windows 10, plenty of desktop publishing tools and a lot of corporate document systems still do not read WebP. PNG opens in all of them.

You are about to edit it

PNG is lossless, so every save while you work is bit-for-bit identical. Most lossy WebP files have already been compressed once by the site that served them; converting to PNG stops any further loss from stacking on top.

Design and layout work

Figma, Sketch, InDesign, slide decks and app assets all expect PNG for anything with transparency. It is the format design tools were built around.

Upload forms that reject WebP

Marketplaces, print services and government forms often accept only JPG and PNG. When you need transparency too, PNG is the only one of the two that qualifies.

Animated WebP

A WebP can hold an animation, and PNG cannot — a PNG is a single image. So an animated WebP has to become either one still or a set of stills.

This tool checks each file as you add it. If there is more than one frame, the thumbnail gets a badge with the frame count and you choose: take just the first frame, or convert every frame of the WebP to PNG as its own numbered file in a ZIP, each keeping its transparency. The first frame is the default, because a twenty-four frame animation would otherwise turn into twenty-four downloads without warning.

If you want it to still move, this is the wrong tool

There is a format for animated PNG — APNG — and dedicated converters that turn an animated WebP into one, preserving the frame timing. This tool does not produce APNG, and rather than pretend otherwise: if a file that still animates is what you need, use one of those instead. What we give you is the frames themselves, which is the right answer when you want to edit, pick or rebuild them.

An honest limitation

Reading individual frames uses the browser’s ImageDecoder API. Chrome and Edge support it; Firefox and Safari added it later, and older versions do not have it at all. Where it is missing, this tool falls back to the first frame and says so on screen.

How to Convert WebP to PNG in 3 Steps

The whole conversion happens on your own machine, so there is no upload, no queue and no waiting on a server. Your original WebP files are never modified.

  1. 1

    Add your WebP files

Drag in up to 50 files at once, or click to browse. Animated files get a frame-count badge as soon as they load.

  2. 2

    Decide about the background

If your files are already transparent there is nothing to set. If they sit on a solid colour and you want that gone, turn on background removal and pick the colour here.

  3. 3

    Convert and download

Each file shows its before and after size. Take them one by one or grab everything as a single ZIP.

Pro tipNot sure whether your WebP is transparent? Turn on background removal and look at the thumbnail. If it was already transparent, the chequerboard was showing before you touched anything.

NoteThe size readout is measured on your first file. PNG almost always grows, and this is where you find out by how much before committing to a batch.

Your PNG Will Be Much Larger

Expect a serious jump. WebP is typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG, and PNG is lossless, so going from WebP to PNG can multiply the file several times over. This is the steepest size increase of any conversion on this site, and it is worth knowing before you batch a hundred files.

How much depends entirely on the picture, and this is one of the few places where content matters more than settings:

Photographs grow the most

Sensor noise and soft gradients are exactly what lossy compression discards and exactly what PNG has to store faithfully. A photograph can easily come out five times heavier or more.

Flat graphics barely grow

Logos, icons and screenshots are made of large areas of identical colour, which PNG compresses extremely well. These are also the files most likely to need transparency, so the format fits them twice over.

If the PNG is too big for where it is going

Ask what the file is for. If it needs transparency, PNG is the price of admission and reducing the pixel dimensions is the only real lever. If it does not need transparency and just needs to be small, PNG may be the wrong destination entirely.

Your Files Never Leave This Tab

Several WebP converters run locally now, and that is how it should be. This one does too, including the frame extraction and the background removal, which elsewhere both mean an upload.

You can verify it in about ten seconds: load the page, turn off your Wi-Fi, and convert a file. It still works, because there was never anything to send.

In-Browser vs Upload-Based Converters

Local processing is no longer rare for WebP to PNG, so the differences that matter have moved elsewhere.

AspectThis converterUpload-based tools

Creating transparencySolid backgrounds, unlimitedRarely offered
Animated WebPEvery frame, locallyUsually first frame only

The trade-off is real and worth stating plainly: because the work happens on your device, a very large batch of very large images is limited by your own machine rather than by a server farm. Exporting every frame of several long animations is the heaviest thing this tool can be asked to do.

WebP to PNG — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything people ask before converting their first file.

Does converting WebP to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. Both formats have an alpha channel, so transparent areas come across untouched. This is the main reason to choose PNG over JPG here — JPG would force every transparent pixel to become a solid colour.

My WebP has a white background. Can I make it transparent?

Yes — turn on background removal and pick the colour to take out. Converting alone will not do it: the format change preserves transparency but never creates it. Background removal works on solid, flat backdrops, not on busy photographs.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

Because PNG is lossless and WebP is usually not. Several times larger is normal. Photographs grow the most; logos and screenshots barely grow at all. The output size is measured and shown before you download.

Can I convert an animated WebP to PNG?

Yes — as one still frame, or as every frame in a numbered ZIP. PNG cannot hold animation. If you need a file that still moves, look for an APNG converter instead; this tool gives you the frames, not the animation.

Is this WebP to PNG converter free?

Yes — no watermark, no signup, no daily limit, no restriction on commercial use. The 50-file limit per batch exists to protect your browser’s memory. There is no paid tier to unlock and no download timer.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion, the frame extraction and the background removal all happen in this tab. Load the page, disconnect from the internet, and convert a file. It still works, because nothing was ever sent.

Can I batch convert WebP to PNG?

Yes, up to 50 WebP files at a time. Settings apply to the whole batch, and everything comes back as a single ZIP — including every frame of any animations, if you asked for them.

Why did my download save as WebP instead of PNG?

Your browser told the site it accepts WebP, so the site sent WebP. It is a negotiation that happens before you click anything, and the file is not corrupted. There is a fuller explanation, and what you can do about it, on the WebP to JPG page.
