Why Convert JPG to PNG?
PNG and JPG solve different problems. JPEG throws away detail to make photographs small; PNG keeps every pixel exactly as it is and accepts a bigger file in exchange. The conversion is worth doing when you need what PNG offers — and a waste of disk space when you do not.
You will see the format written both ways, and converting JPEG to PNG means exactly the same thing. Four reasons hold up:
You are about to edit the image
Every time a JPG is opened, changed and saved again it gets re-compressed, and the damage accumulates across rounds. Convert JPG to PNG before you start editing and the file stops degrading — each save from that point on is lossless.
Something will only accept PNG
App store assets, some print workflows, certain CMS uploaders, browser extension icons and plenty of design tools expect PNG and reject JPG outright. Here the conversion is not an improvement, it is a requirement.
You need transparency
JPG has no alpha channel at all, so a logo saved as JPG carries its background with it forever. PNG can hold transparency — and if your background is a single flat colour, this tool can knock it out while it converts.
The image is a graphic, not a photograph
Screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with text or hard edges compress badly as JPEG and pick up halos around every line. Those images belong in PNG, and moving them there stops the halos getting worse.
Does Converting JPG to PNG Improve Quality?
No. Converting JPG to PNG cannot restore quality, because the detail JPEG discarded is genuinely gone from the file. PNG is lossless going forward, not backwards.
This is the single most common misunderstanding about the format, and it is worth being blunt about. JPEG compression works by permanently deleting image data it judges you will not miss. That data is not hidden, compressed or set aside — it no longer exists in the file. A lossless format has nothing to recover it from.
What you actually gain is a guarantee about the future. Every subsequent save of that PNG is bit-for-bit identical, so if you are about to crop, annotate or colour-correct the image, converting JPG to PNG first means the edits do not stack another round of JPEG loss on top of the first one.
Be sceptical of any converter that promises to convert JPG to PNG "without losing quality". Read literally it is true — the conversion itself loses nothing. Read the way most people will read it, it suggests you are getting quality back, and you are not.
The same goes for resolution
Converting to PNG does not add pixels. A blurry 600-pixel JPG becomes a blurry 600-pixel PNG that happens to weigh three times more. Nothing in the format can invent detail that was never captured.
When the conversion genuinely helps
Convert before an editing session, before archiving a graphic you will reuse, or before handing an image to something that will re-encode it again. In all three cases PNG protects what is left rather than restoring what is gone.
Making a JPG Background Transparent
Converting JPG to PNG does not create transparency by itself. It gives the file an alpha channel, but every pixel in it starts out fully opaque. Something has to actually remove the background.
That gap is why most people searching for a JPG to PNG transparent converter end up on an AI background remover instead — and most of those want an upload, an account, or a subscription before they hand the file back.

Why tolerance matters more than you would think
A white background inside a JPG is almost never pure white. JPEG compression makes flat areas wobble by a few values in every direction, so matching only exact white leaves a speckled fringe behind. The tolerance slider widens the match — around 12% handles ordinary compression, and heavily compressed files may need more.
About the edges
JPEG also leaves a thin band of in-between pixels wherever a hard edge meets the background. Colour matching alone cannot catch them, which is why a faint grey halo can survive the removal. The "trim one pixel" option eats that band. Turn it off if fine detail starts looking chewed.
What it will not do
This is colour matching, not object recognition. A gradient sky, a photographed room, or a subject that shares its colour with the backdrop will not come out cleanly, and no amount of tolerance fixes that — high values simply start deleting the subject. If you need a person cut out of a real photograph, use a dedicated background remover; that job needs a model, and running one would mean shipping megabytes of weights to every visitor.

Your PNG Will Be Larger — Here’s Why
Expect a PNG to land somewhere between two and five times the size of the JPG it came from. That is not a flaw in the conversion, it is the whole point of the format: PNG stores every pixel exactly, so it cannot use the shortcuts that make JPEG small.
How much it grows depends entirely on the picture. This is one of the few places where the content matters more than the settings:
Photographs grow the most
Sensor noise and soft gradients are exactly what JPEG is good at discarding and exactly what PNG has to store faithfully. A photograph is where you will see the biggest jump, sometimes more than five times.
Flat graphics barely grow at all
Screenshots, logos and diagrams are made of large areas of identical colour, which PNG compresses extremely efficiently. These can come out close to the original size, and occasionally smaller than the JPG.
If the PNG is too big for where it is going
Ask what the file is for. If it needs to be small and does not need transparency or further editing, PNG may be the wrong destination — converting it back would only re-apply lossy compression, so keep the original JPG instead. If you do need PNG, reducing the pixel dimensions saves far more than anything else you can change.
When to Use PNG and When to Stay With JPG
Neither format is better in general. They are optimised for different kinds of image, and picking the wrong one costs you either quality or bandwidth.
Use PNG for
Logos, icons, screenshots, diagrams, UI mockups, anything containing text, and anything that needs a transparent background. Also use it as a working format while you edit.
Stay with JPG for
Photographs that are already finished and just need to be shared, uploaded or displayed. Converting them to PNG multiplies the file size and gives you nothing visible in return.
Where either works
Small images where the difference is a few dozen kilobytes either way. Do not spend time on the decision — pick whichever the destination prefers.
Where neither is ideal
Very large photographs on a modern website are often better served by WebP or AVIF, which beat both formats on size. PNG and JPG remain the safe choice when compatibility matters more than bytes.
