Why Image Size Matters

A modern phone camera produces files between 3 and 12 MB. Almost nothing you do with those files actually needs that much data, which is why most people end up looking for a way to compress an image at some point.

Most of the time you are not trying to preserve a photograph. You are trying to get past a limit.

Pages that load before people leave

Images are usually the heaviest thing on a web page. Cutting them down is the single most effective speed improvement available to most sites, and it costs nothing but a re-encode.

Upload limits that reject your file

Job portals, government forms, university applications and email attachments all impose hard caps — often 2 MB, sometimes 500 KB or even 200 KB. A photo straight off a phone will not fit.

Pro tipIf a file is still too big, resize before you lower quality further. A 4000 px photo displayed at 800 px is carrying five times the pixels it needs, and dropping the resolution costs you nothing visible.

NoteQuality 80 is a good default for photographs. Below about 60 you start seeing blocky artifacts around edges and text, especially on screenshots.

Lossy vs Lossless Compression

Lossy compression makes a file smaller by permanently discarding image detail your eye is unlikely to miss. Lossless compression makes it smaller by storing the exact same pixels more efficiently — nothing is thrown away, but the savings are far more modest.

JPEG and WebP are lossy by design. PNG is lossless. That single difference explains most of what you will see in the results.

Use lossy for photographs

Photos have soft gradients and noise, which hide compression artifacts well. You can usually drop 70–90% of the file size before anyone notices anything.

Use lossless for flat colour and text

Screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or transparency. Lossy compression makes text look smeared, and PNG will not throw those edges away.

What the numbers actually mean

A quality value is not a percentage of anything you can see. Quality 80 does not mean the image is 80% as good — it is a knob on the encoder that controls how aggressively detail is discarded, and the visible effect differs from picture to picture.

That is why the before-and-after size is shown for every file. The number that matters is the one you can check.

Compression is not reversible

Once detail is discarded it is gone. Compressing an already-compressed JPEG a second time degrades it further, so always work from the original when you can.

How to Hit a Specific File Size

Almost every image compressor gives you a quality slider and leaves you to guess. But the actual requirement is rarely "quality 70" — it is "under 2 MB" or "no larger than 500 KB".

So this tool lets you say that directly. Switch to target size, type the number in KB, and the quality setting is searched for you.

How it finds the setting

It encodes the image a handful of times at different quality values, narrowing the range each round until it lands on the highest quality that still fits under your ceiling. It takes a fraction of a second per image.

When the target cannot be reached

Sometimes the image simply has too many pixels to fit, even at minimum quality. The tool tells you rather than silently handing back an oversized file — cap the longest edge and run it again.

Which Format Should You Use

When you compress an image you can keep its original format or convert it along the way. The right answer depends on what is in the picture.

JPEG

The safe choice for photographs. Universally supported, no transparency.

PNG

Lossless, supports transparency. Best for screenshots, logos and line art — and much larger for photos.

WebP

Typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, and it supports transparency too. Supported in every current browser.

GIF

Only worth keeping for animation. For a still image a GIF is almost always larger and worse-looking than the same picture as PNG or WebP.

If the image is going on a website, WebP is usually the best trade available. If it is going into a form that only accepts JPEG, keep JPEG. And if you are unsure, keeping the original format is never a mistake — you can always compress images again later with a different setting.

Your photos carry more than you think

A photo from a phone usually contains EXIF metadata: the camera model, the exact timestamp, and very often the GPS coordinates of where it was taken. That travels with the file when you share it.

Because this tool re-encodes each image in your browser, that metadata is not carried over to the output. Nothing is uploaded either, so the original never sits on someone else’s server while it is being processed.

The last row is honest: a dedicated service running a tuned encoder like MozJPEG can squeeze out a few more percent than a browser can. If you are optimising a large site and every kilobyte counts, that difference is worth having. For everything else, not uploading your photos is worth more.

What people ask before they compress images in bulk.

How do I compress an image without losing quality?

Use lossless mode, or keep the quality slider above 80. Truly lossless compression only shrinks a file by a modest amount, because it cannot throw anything away. For photographs, quality 80–85 is usually indistinguishable from the original at normal viewing size while cutting most of the file size.

How do I compress an image to 200 KB?

Switch to target size and type 200. The quality setting is searched automatically until the result fits under your number. If the image has too many pixels to reach it at any quality, cap the longest edge as well and run it again.

Is this image compressor free? Is there a limit?

Free, with no watermark and no daily quota. The only cap is 50 files per batch, and that exists to protect your device’s memory rather than to sell you an upgrade. Run several batches if you have more.

Do my images get uploaded?

No. They are compressed inside your browser. You can verify it by disconnecting from the network once the page has loaded — compression still works. This also means your photo metadata, including GPS coordinates, is never sent anywhere.

Which formats can I compress?

JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF. You can keep the original format or convert to WebP while compressing, which is typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality.

Why did my PNG get bigger instead of smaller?

PNG is lossless, so there is often nothing left to remove. If the file was already optimised, re-encoding it can add a little overhead. For photographs stored as PNG, converting to JPEG or WebP will cut the size dramatically — that is usually the real fix.

Does compressing remove EXIF and GPS data?

Yes. Re-encoding drops the metadata. The image is decoded and written out fresh, so camera details, timestamps and location coordinates do not carry over. Orientation is applied to the pixels first, so photos stay the right way up.

What should I do if the file is still too large?

Reduce the dimensions, not just the quality. Pixel count drives file size more than quality does. Capping the longest edge at 1920 px is invisible on screen for most uses and often halves the size on its own.
