Unlock PDF
Remove the password or restrictions from a PDF you have the password for — right in your browser. Your file and your password never leave your device.
Nothing Is Uploaded
Your PDF and the password you type both stay in your browser — neither is ever sent to a server.
Not a Password Cracker
You need the correct password to remove it. There's no backdoor and no brute-forcing — a forgotten password can't be recovered.
Remove Restrictions
If a PDF opens but blocks printing or copying, those permission limits can be removed without a password.
Free, No Sign-Up
No account, no watermark, no file-size limits — just unlock and download your PDF.
TL;DR: Remove a password from a PDF you can already open, right in your browser — the file and the password never leave your device. It's not a cracker: you need the correct password, and a forgotten one can't be recovered. Permission-only restrictions (no printing or copying) can be removed without a password. The unlock engine (~1.3 MB) loads once on first use. Free, no signup.
Why Remove a Password from a PDF?
Maybe you have a PDF you know the password to — an encrypted bank statement, a payslip, a locked invoice — and you're tired of typing the password every time you open it, so you want a password-free copy to file away. Or you have a PDF that opens fine but won't let you print or copy from it, and you need to actually use it.
Here's the catch with most online unlockers: they ask you to upload the confidential file — and, to remove an open password, the password too — to their servers. That's the privacy paradox at its sharpest: you hand over both the document and its key just to take a lock off. This tool removes the paradox by doing everything in your browser, so the file and the password never leave your device.
How It Works (and What It Can't Do)
This tool removes a PDF password in your browser using qpdf compiled to WebAssembly. To remove an open password you must enter the correct password — it is not a password cracker and cannot bypass a password you don't know. Permission-only restrictions can be removed without a password.
It's not a password cracker. Removing an open password requires you to type the correct password. There's no backdoor and no brute-forcing, so a password you've forgotten can't be recovered here.
Permission restrictions come off without a password. If a PDF opens but blocks printing, copying, or editing (an owner-only restriction), you can remove those limits by leaving the password field empty.
The engine loads once on first use. Unlocking runs locally with a ~1.3 MB WebAssembly build of qpdf. The first unlock downloads that engine once, so it can be a little slower; after that it's quick.
Unlock Your PDF Without Uploading It
Every mainstream unlocker — iLovePDF, Smallpdf, Adobe, PDF24, Sejda — decrypts your file on its servers. To remove an open password, that means uploading the confidential document and the password to a company you have to trust with both.
This tool skips the upload entirely. Your PDF is decrypted in your browser tab, the password is used on your device, and the unlocked copy downloads locally. Load the page, disconnect from the internet, and unlock the file anyway — the file and the password never leave your machine.
How to Unlock a PDF in 3 Steps
- 1
Open your PDF
Drag and drop the file onto the tool above, or click to browse. It loads locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
- 2
Enter the password
Type the password you use to open the PDF. If it only restricts printing or copying, you can leave the field empty.
- 3
Unlock & download
Click Unlock PDF; the engine loads once on first use. The downloaded copy opens without a password — your original file stays untouched.
What You Can Use This For
A handful of situations cover almost every reason people unlock a PDF:
Stop retyping a password
Make a password-free copy of a statement or invoice you open often, so you don't type the password every time.
Print a restricted PDF
Remove a printing restriction from a PDF you can open so you can actually print it.
Copy text you need
Lift a copy/extract restriction so you can quote or reuse text from a document you're allowed to use.
Prepare files to merge
Remove passwords before combining several PDFs into one, so the merge isn't blocked.
Share with your team
Turn an encrypted report into a version teammates can open directly, when the password is no longer needed.
Tidy up old files
Strip passwords you set long ago and no longer need from your own archived documents.
Open Password vs Permissions: What Gets Removed
An open (user) password blocks opening the file — removing it requires the correct password. A permissions (owner) password only limits printing, copying, or editing, and it can usually be removed without any password because it's a soft restriction.
So if the PDF asks for a password just to open, type it in. If it opens but blocks actions, leave the password empty and unlock it anyway. Want to go the other way and lock a PDF instead? password-protect a PDF.
Browser-Based vs Upload-Based PDF Unlockers
Every tool that can unlock a PDF works either on a company's server or on your own device:
| Aspect | This tool (in your browser) | Typical online unlockers |
|---|---|---|
| Where your file goes | Never leaves your device | Uploaded to a server |
| Where your password goes | Stays on your device | Sent with the file |
| Account or payment | Free, no account | Login or paid tiers common |
| Is it a password cracker? | No — needs the correct password | Some sites claim to crack |
| File size limit | None beyond your device | Caps on free tiers |
| Where it runs | In your browser (WebAssembly) | On a server |
One honest note: this isn't a cracking tool. It removes a password you already know and lifts permission-only restrictions — it can't open a PDF whose password you've lost. For your own files, that's exactly what you want, without uploading anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything people ask about unlocking a PDF
Is my PDF and password uploaded to a server?
No — both stay in your browser. The file is decrypted on your own device and the password you type is never sent anywhere. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
Can it unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?
No — you need the correct password. This is not a cracker and has no backdoor or brute-forcing, so a forgotten open password can't be recovered. Permission-only restrictions, however, can be removed without a password.
How is this different from a PDF password cracker?
It removes a password you already know; it doesn't guess unknown ones. Cracking tools try to break into files you can't open. This tool only removes a password you can already enter, or lifts permission restrictions — for your own documents.
Can it remove printing or copying restrictions?
Yes — usually without a password. If a PDF opens but blocks printing, copying, or editing, leave the password field empty and unlock it to remove those owner-only limits.
What's the difference between an open password and a permissions password?
An open password blocks opening; a permissions password limits printing, copying, and editing. Removing an open password needs the correct password; permission restrictions can usually be removed without one. To add a password, see protect PDF.
Is it safe and private?
Yes — everything happens on your device. The PDF is unlocked locally with qpdf compiled to WebAssembly, so neither the file nor the password leaves your browser.
Why is it a little slow the first time?
The unlock engine (~1.3 MB) loads once on first use. Unlocking runs entirely in your browser, which means downloading a small WebAssembly engine the first time. After that, unlocking is fast.
How do I add a password instead (lock a PDF)?
Use the Protect PDF tool. Unlock removes a password; protect adds one. The two are a matched pair, both running entirely in your browser.
