You are converting for compatibility, not for quality: AVIF is the better format, but JPG is the one that opens in older software, print shops and upload forms that reject anything they do not recognise. Why convert AVIF to JPG

AVIF is a genuinely better image format. It compresses photographs far harder than JPEG at the same visual quality, it supports transparency, and every current browser can display it. The problem is everything that is not a current browser. Older versions of Windows and macOS show a blank thumbnail. Office, most print shops, plenty of photo editors, older phones, and a surprising number of upload forms either refuse an AVIF outright or accept it and then fail silently. Most people meet AVIF by accident rather than by choice. You right-click an image on a website, save it, and the thing that lands in your downloads folder has an extension you have never seen. Or a colleague sends you a photo exported from a modern phone or a design tool. Either way you end up holding a file that your own computer previews as a blank rectangle, and the first thing you want is to turn it into something ordinary.

That is the whole reason to convert AVIF to JPG, and it is worth being clear about the trade. You are not improving the picture. You are moving it into an older, less efficient format because that format is understood absolutely everywhere. JPEG is thirty years old, and that is precisely its advantage: no software on earth is going to be confused by it. That is also why the answer to "which format should I convert AVIF to" is almost always JPG rather than something else. PNG would keep every pixel exactly but produce an enormous file for a photograph, and WebP has the same compatibility problem you are trying to escape. JPG is the format you pick when the only requirement is that it opens.

What is AVIF, and what changes when you convert it?

AVIF is a modern image format built on the AV1 video codec. It stores photographs at roughly half the size of a JPEG of similar quality, which is why websites serve it and why almost nothing outside a browser can read it.

Because AVIF is already a lossy format, converting to JPG means decoding it and encoding again in a different lossy format. That second encode is where quality can be lost, which is why the quality setting on this page matters. At high quality settings the difference is invisible on a photograph. At low settings you will start to see the soft blockiness that JPEG is known for, especially around hard edges and text. This is worth understanding rather than worrying about: you are not degrading the image every time you look at it, only once, at the moment it is written. Convert once at a sensible quality and the result is stable from then on.

The other thing that changes when you convert AVIF to JPG is transparency. AVIF can store a transparent background and JPEG cannot, so anything transparent has to be filled with a solid colour before the file can be written. That is covered further down.

Why the file usually gets bigger

This surprises people, so it is worth stating plainly: converting AVIF to JPG almost always produces a larger file, often one and a half to three times larger. That is not a fault in the conversion. AVIF is built on a modern video codec and squeezes photographs far harder than a format designed in the early nineties. Going from AVIF to JPG is going backwards in compression efficiency, and the file size reflects that. The exact multiplier depends on the picture. A busy photograph with lots of detail may only grow by half again, because JPEG copes reasonably well with that kind of content. A clean image with large smooth areas, like a portrait against a plain wall or a sky, is exactly where AVIF is strongest, so that is where the gap is widest and the growth most dramatic.

If somebody told you that converting to JPG would make a file smaller, they were probably thinking of PNG. Coming from PNG, JPG is a huge saving. Coming from AVIF, it is a cost you pay in exchange for the file actually opening.

See the size before you convert

The output size readout on this page encodes your first file for real as you move the quality slider, so the number you see is the number you get, not an estimate. That matters more here than on most converters, because the direction of travel is upward and people are not expecting it. If the result is heavier than the destination allows, lower the quality a little or use the target size mode below.

Or just name the size you need

If something told you the file must be under 500 KB, say that instead of guessing at a quality number. Target size mode searches quality levels until the file fits, which is the setting people actually want when an upload form has a hard limit. It is also the thing most AVIF converters do not offer at all: they give you a quality slider and leave you to hunt for the right value by exporting repeatedly.

Choosing a quality level

Quality 85 is the sensible default and the one this page starts on. On a photograph, 85 and above is visually identical to the original for almost everybody, and pushing to 100 mostly buys you a much bigger file rather than a better looking one. Below about 70 you start to see JPEG doing what JPEG does: soft haloes around hard edges, and blockiness in flat areas like skies.

The one case where you should push higher is artwork with sharp edges. Screenshots, logos, line drawings and anything with text render badly in JPEG at any quality, because the format was designed for photographs and its compression assumes gentle gradients rather than hard boundaries. If your AVIF is a screenshot rather than a photo, JPG is the wrong destination and you will get a better result keeping it lossless. It is a note rather than a block, because sometimes you genuinely do need a JPG of a screenshot and only you know that.

What happens to a transparent background

AVIF supports transparency and JPEG does not. There is no way around this: the JPEG format simply has no channel to store it in. So when a file with transparent areas is converted, those areas have to be filled with a solid colour, and that colour is baked in permanently. This converter shows the fill colour control only when a file with transparency is actually detected, and defaults to white.

There is a privacy side effect worth knowing about. Re-encoding through a canvas strips the metadata that was attached to the original, including any GPS coordinates. If you were about to send a holiday photo to a stranger, that is a good thing. If you needed the camera settings or the capture date, keep the original AVIF as well, because that information does not survive the conversion. One thing that is preserved is the orientation: a photo taken sideways on a phone comes out the right way up rather than lying on its side, which is a failure mode of quite a few converters that read the pixels without reading the rotation flag.

Frequently asked questions

Is this really free, and is there a limit?

Yes, and the only limit is 50 files at a time. There is no account, no email, no watermark and no paid tier holding back the useful settings. The 50 file cap exists because the work happens in your browser and a larger batch risks running your tab out of memory, not because of a plan.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser. Your AVIF is never transmitted, so there is no server copy to delete and no retention period to worry about. You can confirm it by disconnecting from the internet once the page has loaded and converting anyway.

Why is my JPG bigger than the AVIF?

Because AVIF compresses much harder than JPEG. That is expected, not a fault. AVIF is built on a modern video codec and typically stores a photo in half the space or less. Converting to JPG trades that efficiency for compatibility. If the size matters, use target size mode and name the number of kilobytes you can live with. Growth of one and a half to three times is typical, and smooth images such as portraits and skies grow the most because that is where AVIF is strongest.

Will the picture lose quality?

A little, because JPEG is lossy and the file is being encoded a second time. At quality 85 or above the difference is invisible on a photograph. It is more noticeable on screenshots, logos and anything containing text, because JPEG was designed for photographs and handles hard edges poorly at every quality level. The loss happens once, when the JPG is written, not every time the file is opened afterwards.

What happens to a transparent background?

It gets filled with a solid colour, because JPEG cannot store transparency. The fill colour control appears only when transparency is actually detected in your files, and defaults to white. The choice is permanent once the JPG is written, so pick the colour that matches where the image is going.

Does the GPS location stay in the file?

No. Re-encoding strips the original metadata, including location. For most people sharing photos this is a benefit rather than a loss. If you need the capture date or camera settings, hold on to the original AVIF, because that information is not carried across.

Can I convert a JPG back to AVIF?

Not here, and re-encoding back would not recover anything anyway. Quality lost in a lossy encode cannot be restored by converting again. If you need a modern format for your own website, convert from the original rather than from the JPG.

Can I convert animated AVIF files?

Yes, and you can choose whether to export every frame. Animated AVIF is uncommon, so the default is to take the first frame only. If a file turns out to have several frames the tool tells you, and you can switch to exporting all of them as numbered JPG files in a ZIP. Some browsers cannot read individual frames, and in that case the tool says so rather than pretending.
